Âvârız was an extraordinary levy which was coll particularly during war time. in general, it was levied per household. The defters related to âvârız are significant historical sources of information about the demographic structure of a particular region as well as the financial, social and professional status of its inhabitants. This work, which was prepared for publication by the distinguished scholar Prof. Dr. Halil Sahillioğlu, reflects the social of the city of Damascus during the 17th century.
